Chapter 95
These days, various external matters were intricately unfolding around Blois. However, no matter how many things there were to worry about and how busy things got, I couldn’t neglect my promise to Sasha. The day had come when we decided to perform a summoning ritual for the contract with a demon.
“I can’t believe this day is coming.”
Sighing, I tightly held Sasha’s hand.
Sasha, with her white hair neatly cut and arranged on her dark skin, was dressed very cutely today.
In a crisply ironed white short-sleeved shirt, a cute blue vest, well-fitted black trousers, and overly polished adult-like leather shoes, she looked so well put together that it was oddly endearing. The maids had apparently gotten excited about the idea of taking Sasha out.
Sasha consoled me with a different, more composed demeanor than usual.
“Rowaine, I’ll do well! I can do it. This is something I really want.”
How could the gaze of a young child, who only reached my chest, be so resolute? To have such conviction in a life-changing decision that hinged on staking one’s own life was truly remarkable.
‘…I would have been really confused if it were me.’
I responded by pumping both of my fists in the air at Sasha. The child, filled with excitement, hurriedly dashed ahead without a care.
“Watch your step, Sasha! Do you know the way? Go slowly!”
Seeing her easily bounding up the steep hillside as if it were flat ground, I shouted out, but my voice seemed to not reach her due to her excitement.
At that moment, as a gust of wind brushed against my shoulder, I jumped in surprise and let out a startled scream.
“My, mother!”
“It’s me, Rowaine.”
It was Dimitri. I swept away the surprised feeling in my chest.
“Are you scared?”
“Look at this path. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t be scared.”
Saying so, I pointed to the mountain path stretched out before us.
The maids seemed to have thought that Dimitri and I were taking Sasha out to some fancy place, but the place we secretly came to was deep in the mountains. It was a secluded spot within the mountains at an ambitious hour, with no visible path.
Feeling surrounded by darkness and the eerie trees around me, I anxiously gazed at Dimitri and asked him with a tinge of resentment.
“Does it have to be such an eerie place like this?”
“A location like this is appropriate for summoning a demon. It’s secluded, with no human presence and no interference from any light except the moonlight. They enjoy corrupted souls and things of that sort, so if summoned just anywhere, they wouldn’t focus on the conversation, and their attention would quickly be diverted elsewhere.”
We were making our way to the deep cave in the mountains that he had arranged for someone to find. Due to the requirement for minimal human presence, we left the steward and the knights below the mountain, and only Dimitri, Sasha, and I ascended the mountain.
For someone like me who feared darkness and unseen beings, it was driving me crazy.
‘No matter how much I raised the light of the magic lamp, I can only see right in front of me.”
Even though it was summer, the air in the mountains was cold. Moreover, the spiky shadows of trees and the cries of wild animals made me shrink back.
“Sasha went ahead, but will it be okay for her in this darkness?”
“For cats, this is no different from broad daylight. There’s moonlight, after all.”
“What if she goes ahead recklessly and hurts herself badly?”
“I’ve never heard a story about a cat getting seriously injured from stumbling on a mountain.”
“But Sasha is in her human form right now…”
Just as I was saying that, something white fell from the top of my head.
“Aack!”
In a panic, I dropped the magic lantern I was holding and instinctively burrowed into Dimitri’s embrace. I was too consumed by fear to even consider who I had nestled into, and my only thoughts were finding a ‘safe person’ and ‘hiding myself.’
“Cowardly Rowaine! Hehe!”
The white thing that had fallen from above was none other than Sasha.
It seemed that she had turned into a cat, despite my worries about her movements becoming slower due to her human form and the possibility of an accident. She seemed to have thrown away her clothes and shoes, which she had been wearing.
Clutching my racing heart, I nervously scolded Sasha as tears welled up.
“Don’t do that, Sasha! I really hate this kind of thing!”
“What on earth are you scared of!”
Sasha teased me and once again disappeared into the darkness.
“I really hate it. Oh, I really can’t stand it… this kind of place.”
At the same time, my head was spinning with dizziness. It wasn’t just being dramatic, after all, it was natural for everyone to have something they couldn’t bear due to fear.
To the extent of how much fear I was feeling…
“Calm down, Rowaine.”
“Aah, don’t push me. Don’t push me away!”
I was gripped with such a panic that I clung to Dimitri’s shirt as if he was trying to tear me away when it felt like he was trying to pry me off. At this point, I was aware that I was in his embrace, but that was all. It didn’t matter to me who I was embracing right now.
“The magic lamp rolled down below. If you wait for a moment, I can quickly…”
“You want me to stay here alone? Dimitri, I’m going to die…!”
The fear I had been holding back forcefully exploded because of Sasha, and I just couldn’t calm down at all. Even the sound of branches snapping under my feet felt like a challenge.
I didn’t even consider that I might be a burden to Dimitri or that I could be inconveniencing him. Such thoughts were things I could consider when I had a bit of room to spare, but right now, I was solely focused on life and death on my own.
“Rowaine, maybe you should go back to the mansion and wait. I’ll bring Sasha back safely…”
“No, no! I don’t want to…!”
Even though I was terrified to death, this was an issue that I couldn’t compromise on because this might be the last time I see Sasha. So, I wanted to witness every step of the process with my own eyes.
Wiping away tears with my sleeve, I struggled to compose myself.
“Alright, I’m coming. Without being overly dramatic… mother!”
The moment I pulled away from Dimitri, resolving to strengthen my heart, I jumped and clung to him again when I felt something tugging on my sleeve.
Dimitri was the only one I could rely on in this situation.
“It’s a tree branch, Rowaine.”
Even though I must have been annoying, he patiently reassured me with remarkable patience. I apologized, dampening his chest with tears.
“I’m sorry, but I really want to go with you. So if you just give me a moment, I’ll calm down. Just a moment…”
He whispered in my ear with a smirk.
“It’s going to be all night at this rate.”
“Oh, no. No, it’s okay. It’ll just take a moment. Hoo, ha, huu. Actually, would you rather knock me out and take me there?”
“Knock… you out?”
“I thought people faint when you hit them on the back of their necks.”
“There’s a risk of breaking the neck bone if you do it wrong, and that would be incredibly painful.”
“Between feeling like I’m dying and feeling incredibly painful, which one is better?”
Dimitri chuckled softly at my words. His movements of shaking his head could be felt distinctly through our connected bodies.
I wondered if that leisurely and gentle laughter had somehow comforted me since my heart became noticeably calmer. It was only then that I began to sense a pleasant fragrance I hadn’t noticed before. A warm scent emanated from his sun-dried clothes.
It swiftly helped soothe me.
‘Okay, it’s alright… I can go. I’m not scared at all.”
I slowly opened my tightly shut eyes and pulled myself away from Dimitri. As I tried to take a step forward, I felt an emptiness in my hand.
‘Ah. Come to think of it, I threw the magic lantern in panic…’
Simultaneously, I remembered how I had panicked and stopped Dimitri from retrieving the fallen lamp earlier.
“Dimitri…”
When I gazed up at him with a pitiful expression, he smiled and spoke reassuringly.
“Just take two deep breaths, and I’ll go get it quickly.”
“I’m sorry…”
‘Should I encourage Coco and make a contract with the demon? It’s too disappointing to finish this only once.’
Turning away from Rowaine, Dimitri leaped down from the cliff path below to retrieve the magic lamp as he grinned wickedly like a demon.
Even though he could have just ordered Shedim to fetch it, the only reason he came down himself was because the scared Rowaine was too cute. Moreover, he really liked the fact that her scent was lingering all over his body.
Humming a soft tune under his breath, as he made a strong leap and landed near where Rowaine was, he could see her crouching on the ground, huddled up.
“Are you okay, Rowaine?”
Trying to stifle his laughter, he asked as she lifted her head. Before he knew it, her face was now covered in tears once again.
She clung to him, crying like a child.
“Was that Dimitri humming? I thought it was some creature crawling out… hngh.”
Dimitri covered his face with one hand for a moment to hide his expression. Then, with his eyes closed tightly and suppressing his laughter, he proposed with a serious face.
“It might be better if you ride on my back at this rate. It won’t do if it gets bright outside.”
“I, I don’t want that!”
‘Does she still have the energy left to be stubborn?’
Just as he thought to himself while biting his tongue in regret, Rowaine opened her mouth again with a sob.
“Well then, huuk, but I’m scared of what could be behind my back…”
‘She’s so cute I’m dying.’
To think she was hiding such an adorable appearance. What would she have done if he hadn’t come?
‘…The kiss was a mistake?’
Dimitri’s eyes narrowed.
‘It doesn’t matter. Because one day, we’ll have a kiss that’s not a mistake.’
The image of Rowaine trembling nervously brought back memories of the first day she came to Blois as she boldly invaded his bedroom without hesitation and touched his face with her palm.
But what about now?
“Would it be too difficult to carry and take me there in your arms…?”
“No problem.”
“Thank you… and I’m sorry. I’m such a coward.”
“Not at all.”
Dimitri extended his arms, embracing Levayne into his own hold, and as he looked at Levayne snuggling against his neck, he wore a contented smile.
As he extended his arms, a contented smile painted broadly on his face as he gazed at Rowaine, who threw herself towards him and hugged his neck.
‘There’s no need to rush.’
He held her dearly.
As always, a pleasant scent exuded from Rowaine. It was such an intoxicating scent that made his heart ache.
