Chapter 89
Dimitri went inside and brought Rowaine out. Surprised that she couldn’t control her body, she began apologizing to him.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know why Dimitri is here, but I didn’t realize I was this drunk. Ack, did I step on your foot just now?”
“Don’t worry. You can’t step on anyone’s feet right now.”
Rowaine’s condition seemed severe, seeing that she wasn’t even aware that he was holding her.
She then chuckled softly, seeming unusually cheerful.
“You’re dependable, Dimitri.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
As he held her tightly, he helped her onto the carriage.
Inside the carriage, Elaine was already sitting with a composed expression. As he glanced around, Dimitri chased away Cadis, who was attempting to board with ferocious eyes. Seeing that, Cadis slumped his shoulders and retreated to the coachman’s seat.
Whispering softly, Elaine’s voice resembled that of a pitiful lark.
“I’m sorry, Duke Blois. I should’ve stopped the Duchess. Please don’t be too upset, she was in a very good mood today.”
Dimitri glanced briefly at Elaine with an indifferent gaze.
“There’s no need for the Princess to defend my wife.”
Elaine sensed the temperature difference in Dimitri’s gaze when he looked at Rowaine and when he looked at her. Although she momentarily lost her words, she regained an innocent smile again.
“It’s because we became friends! And if we’re friends, it’s only natural…”
He cut off her words with an uninterested look.
“What I meant was, I didn’t mean to take offense in the first place, Princess.”
Elaine smiled awkwardly.
“…Is that so? You didn’t seem pleased.”
It was clear that she thought Dimitri was a difficult person. Still, he willingly let her think that way and didn’t bother to defend himself. Nonetheless, he responded bluntly to her concerns, finding it bothersome to continue the conversation.
“As long as it’s something Rowaine wants to do, she has the right to get drunk.”
Then, he turned his head towards Rowaine. Seeing her face flush as she fell asleep, a wry smile appeared on his face.
‘It’s the first time I’ve seen her like this.’
Restless, Rowaine tossed and turned, evidently uncomfortable with their shoulders overlapping.
Unsure of how to ease her discomfort, Dimitri fumbled for a solution until he gently guided her arm to rest around his own. Eventually, with her head nestled on his shoulder, her movements gradually subsided.
Unaware of the smile that graced his face, Dimitri glanced at the woman in his embrace with a hint of a smile.
A delightful fragrance emanated from her, and this time, he even detected the sweet scent of grapes, which he liked mixed in as well. As he gazed down at the woman’s arm entwined with his own, he had completely forgotten about Elaine’s presence somewhere along the way.
While he was doing so, Rowaine murmured softly.
“Dimitri…”
“Yes, Rowaine.”
“I’m hungry.”
“We’re almost there, so I’ll have the chef prepare the food.”
At his words, she shook her head and whimpered like a child.
“I want custard cream, ginger cookies sprinkled with lots of sugar on them… and a lot of custard cream.”
“I’ll make sure to convey your request.”
“It’s cold. Cold and firm custard cream… The yellow one… a lot…”
It sounded like a whisper in her sleep.
Amused by her murmurs, he let out a soft chuckle, but his laughter subsided when his eyes met Elaine’s gaze. She was leaning against the carriage windowsill, observing him intently.
At the same time, Elaine swiftly averted her eyes, redirecting her attention to the scenery outside the window, maintaining her composed decorum. Leaning her forehead against the cool glass, she softly hummed a melodious tune.
“Love… Oh, love for you…”
Dimitri turned his attention back to Rowaine, seemingly uninterested in the song she was singing.
Elaine glanced at Dimitri and Rowaine with a strange gaze.
Upon arriving at the mansion, Rowaine, who seemed like she would fall asleep as soon as she entered her room, surprisingly opened her eyes wide and firmly demanded some snacks.
“Custard cream, Dimitri. I told you, remember?”
At first glance, she didn’t appear intoxicated. She maintained such a composed expression that if she hadn’t stumbled a few times or if Dimitri hadn’t supported her, no one would have thought she was drunk.
To maintain her dignity, he quickly sent Elaine to her room before ordering the butler.
“Derek, tell the chef to prepare yellow custard cream with a thick texture and ginger cookies generously sprinkled with sugar. Oh, and make sure the cream is chilled.”
Rowaine cheered enthusiastically and applauded Dimitri’s seamless request.
“Oh, we have exactly the same taste, Dimitri! I knew it!”
Shaking his head, he then gently guided her to sit on the sofa in the reception room, taking a seat beside her.
“It’s nothing.”
“I thought you avoided sugar because you were taking care of your body.”
“I didn’t realize you remembered such trivial details.”
Rowaine muttered, leaning her cheek against the back of the sofa.
“I thought Dimitri was perfect. It’s fascinating that someone like you also pays attention to those things…”
At those words, he gazed at her curiously.
“Do you think I’m perfect?”
“You’re perfectly handsome. Tall, slim, and when I touch…”
When Rowaine boldly reached out her hand, he didn’t shy away and extended his arm to her, and she started caressing his arm.
“Firm.”
[ T/N: ACK! I CAN’T IMAGINE HOW EMBARRASSED SHE WILL BE WHEN SHE WAKES UP LATER!! ⓛⰙⓛฅ ]
The next moment, her hazy gaze bore into his.
“Pretty.”
She lifted her hand and gently touched the area around his eyes.
“It’s very pretty… like a jewel. They are transparent.”
Dimitri swallowed involuntarily. His Adam’s apple moved noticeably.
‘Is it true that people are… honest when they are drunk?’
In that case, were the words she was saying now all sincere?
‘Rowaine said she likes pretty people, so if I’m pretty, then she…’
He felt strange.
He gazed deeply into his reflection in her eyes.
‘Am I perfect…?’
She was the only one who would say such things while looking at a shapeshifter. No one else would use such an expression for a shapeshifter.
A half-human being… that was how they were evaluated.
Even though there were rare cases where certain shapeshifters were considered beautiful and Dimitri himself had heard the forced compliments from Hyle about his good looks, humans, in general, wouldn’t consider shapeshifters to be ‘perfect.’
The disgust that Cayetana used to display when describing him as a ‘hideous monster’ when he was young remained vivid in his memory. The laughter of his stepbrothers, who would mock his appearance, had become a trauma deeply etched in his heart.
Dimitri silently observed Rowaine as she tenderly caressed his cheek. Mesmerized by his gaze, she maintained unwavering eye contact, and a strange atmosphere enveloped the two of them.
In that moment, a knock resonated, accompanied by the voice of the butler.
“I’ll be entering.”
Startled by the sound, Dimitri quickly regained his composure. It was only then did he realize that Rowaine and him had gotten very close.
He coughed lightly and loosened his tie.
The butler, who brought a tray with the ordered custard cream and ginger cookies, sensed the strange atmosphere in the parlor and swiftly exited, leaving the tray.
Dimitri awkwardly opened the lid of the tray and offered the food to Rowaine.
“The chef has worked his magic.”
She chuckled softly before continuing her words.
“I like them, so he always has them on hand.”
As she said so, she grabbed a ginger cookie and generously scooped out a bowlful of custard cream.
“Oh, my goodness. How hungry was I.”
Without holding back, she licked the cream off her fingers and continued to chatter.
“Avila has no food. The maid said she would hastily prepare something, but Avila doesn’t drink so she brought mashed potatoes. I guess there was nothing to eat because it wasn’t mealtime. It’s no wonder why she’s so skinny. We need a chef.”
Dimitri let her talk as she pleased.
The sight of her sucking on her fingers with custard cream smeared on her lips looked enchantingly beautiful.
He couldn’t figure out why such a sight appeared so beautiful to him. She looked so comfortable and happy, and because of her, this moment felt incredibly pleasant.
It was as if he was dreaming.
As Dimitri was distracted by the cream on Rowaine’s lips, she seductively asked.
“This is incredibly delicious. Do you want to try it?”
“Hmm.”
He tilted his head slightly with a strange smile.
“Do you mean it?”
“Try it. You’ll be ecstatic, I promise you.”
She then leaned closer to him. Her eyelids drooped halfway as he looked down at her.
After a brief hesitation, Dimitri lowered his head. As the sweet custard cream touched the tip of his tongue, her tender lips were warm and incredibly soft. He had to admit that her words about him being ecstatic were true.
Licking the cream off her lips lightly, he whispered softly to Rowaine, who was holding cookies in her hands and gazing at him with a dazed expression.
“You’d better not get drunk in front of anyone else, Rowaine.”
