Chapter 72
If the place where the true name was revealed were known, it would be a problem.
A wizard’s true name was binding on that wizard. The room with Isilis’s true name was a place that only the imperial family could enter, and it had been secretly hidden since the first Emperor. However, it was not known what would happen if it was exposed publicly.
“You look like you have a lot on your mind.”
Berthas spoke as she remained motionless in the hallway. Although Isilis had listened to him, she made no reply. Her head felt like it would explode at the thought.
When her eyes suddenly darkened, t turned out Berthas’ hand had covered her eyes.
“What is this…”
“Shh. Be still.”
Covering her eyes, he hugged her from behind and whispered in her ear.
“Isilis. You have too many thoughts.”
“If the Empress doesn’t think, she can’t keep her position.”
“Sure, but put it down for now. You have to think of me too. It’s not good to think about other things when you have other people by your side.”
Then, she came to her senses.
She was the one who couldn’t get rid of the continuing thoughts even though he was by her side. It was clear that Berthas didn’t like that.
“I…”
“That’s okay. I don’t want to hear an apology. I’m just worried.”
His words spread warmth to her. She felt his warmth touch her from behind, his affection for her filling her.
The fact that there was someone who could share her worries rather than having to deal with them alone made her heart beat. Not only that she has someone to share her opinion with, but she had someone by her side with whom she could reveal her inner feelings without any doubt…
…Berthas Hillenton.
This person would soon become Larchen’s consort and stand by her side.
“Berthas.”
While her vision remained obscured, she uttered his name. Then, she raised her hand and placed a gentle kiss on the back of his hand, finally unveiling her face. This marked the initial occasion she initiated contact with Berthas.
Observing his bewildered countenance, she playfully rolled her eyes, causing his breath to momentarily catch in astonishment.
“What are you doing right now…”
“Why, can I not do this?”
“No, not that. That…”
Leaving behind the dazed Berthas, Isilis walked ahead.
It was as if the jumbled mess in her mind was finally finding clarity. Berthas shadowed her steps, which now bore an air of lightness. Footsteps echoed from behind, a sound she relished, signifying his presence tracing her path.
Having someone standing firm behind her made her, a great wizard, happy.
“Isilis.”
His voice caused her to halt and turn around.
Isilis held her close, and she instinctively nestled into his strong embrace. Resting against his unwavering chest, she felt the urge to rely on him. Yet, she bore the title of Empress, responsible for her nation. She couldn’t become dependent… still, this moment felt right.
She shut her eyes, absorbing his body warmth, a temperature that exuded pure comfort.
Couldn’t help but be overwhelmed with emotion, he took immense satisfaction in her shift in demeanor. Even when he ascended the throne of Hillenton, his heart didn’t brim with the same fullness it did now.
He felt like he had the whole world when she came to him first.
‘…Is this love?’
He never expected how happy it was to get those feelings back from the person he loved. Unable to calm his pounding heart, he had no choice but to hold her tightly. His heart felt like it would jump out.
“Your heart is beating.”
Isilis’ words made his heart jump even harder, and he couldn’t help himself. He even wondered why he was like this.
“Because I am with you.”
Feeling her body tremble at his words, Berthas whispered again as he held her body tight as she tried to free herself from his arms.
“I like you… No, I love you, Isilis.”
“Berthas Hillenton.”
“So, accept me.”
Isilis stopped her struggling body upon his heartfelt words. She whispered as she lifted her head and looked into his face.
“You already know my heart, don’t you?”
“No, I never heard of it.”
Isilis’s eyes widened at his resolute words.
“I love you.”
Her words flowed forth with such nonchalance that Berthas found himself holding his breath involuntarily.
In their midst, time seemed to stretch languidly. The universe appeared to freeze, leaving only Isilis solitary within his field of vision. Her countenance, adorned by the starlit backdrop, held an ethereal glow – her alabaster skin, her eyes reminiscent of crescents, and lips as red as her hair.
Couldn’t hold back, he swallowed her lip. He swallowed every breath that passed from her as their breaths met, as he couldn’t resist the compulsion that surged within.
Only when her frustration compelled her to turn away did he reluctantly cease.
“Berthas Hillenton.”
Berthas smiled brightly at her low voice, calling his name as she looked at him with eyes that seemed quite angry.
“One more time.”
Embracing him tightly, Isilis was effortlessly lifted by his arms. In the process, her crown tumbled from her head, and the ornaments adorning her attire emitted a faint jingle as they collided.
Undeterred by the tinkling sound, Berthas scooped her up and initiated a graceful spin. While he could see her flustered reaction to his almost dance-like motions, an irrepressible urge within him urged him to persist without pause.
“Let go!”
“Didn’t I ask you to look at me?”
“Let go!”
He whispered again as he tossed her into the air one last time and caught her.
“I love you, too.”
Isilis’s hands stopped arranging her clothes at his words before she gazed at him and smiled brightly.
Seeing her smiling brightly, reciprocating him, Berthas made up his mind. He wouldn’t let anything separate her from him.
The knights who met Berthas’ eyes as he followed Isilis had to avoid his eyes.
“What did Sir Hector say?”
“The news came that Hillenton’s cleanup is almost finished.”
“That’s good news. What happened to the magic bullet?”
“It is still in the imperial palace.”
Receiving a messenger from Hector, Berthas knocked on the table.
‘There must be traces left somewhere.’
That many magic bullets could not have come to Hillenton’s palace on their own. Although it was clear that the transaction details were somewhere, the former emperor and crown prince were already dead.
He couldn’t ask the dead, cold he?
“Who was the closest person to the former emperor?”
“Already dead.”
“Then, what about the prince’s entourage?”
“That person has already…”
He killed all of them to get rid of the trouble. He never thought he would regret it.
“I should have left at least one…”
His murmur made Count Gatan, who had come as a messenger, shudder.
It was on the battlefield that he had first laid eyes on Berthas Hillenton, the imperial dog, otherwise known as the demon of the battlefield. Even though he praised the way Berthas wielded his sword, the final memory remained etched in his mind — Berthas, drenched in blood, his visage adorned with an enigmatic smile.
Subsequently, upon learning of his conquest of the capital, an inkling formed in Count Gatan’s thoughts.
The Berthas Hillenton he had witnessed on the battlefield wasn’t one to kneel before any emperor. So, without hesitation, the Count chose to bow.
Fortunately, Berthas Hillenton didn’t wield a merciless disposition that would claim lives recklessly.
Unlike other power-hungry nobles, Count Gatan harbored no aspirations for dominance, which ultimately led to his survival. The nobles who had held sway beside the previous Emperor met their demise.
Berthas’s influence was undeniable, and the tally of surviving nobles could be counted on a single hand.
“Then, I’ll have to find it myself.”
Count Gatan raised his head.
“How do you mean to find it…”
“There will be paper trails. There is no way that there is no evidence for that many magic bullets. Talk to Larchen and they will assign a wizard to you, so investigate and come back right away.”
“What?”
“Do you have anything to say?”
“No, no.”
Count Gatan wondered what Berthas’ relationship with Larchen was if he was so confident that the Larchen Empire would give away a wizard, but he chose to keep his mouth shut.
“Berthas.”
When he saw the door open and saw the person coming in, he was startled and lowered his head. It was the Empress of Larchen.
“How was it?”
“I’m looking for it now, so don’t worry too much.”
Berthas’ voice talking kindly to the Empress of Larchen gave him goosebumps. After talking coldly to him, how could he speak in such a sweet voice?
“I think it will be easier to find if you call one of Larchen’s wizards.”
“Alright.”
With the Empress’ gesture, the wizard who was waiting behind approached.
“Who should they go with?”
“That Count Gatan who delivered the news.”
“Ah, the Count of Hillenton? Excuse me for interfering with your conversation.”
“No, no!”
When the voice filled with dignity was directed at him, he answered immediately.
“Then, I’ll have to send the chief wizard, Allure.”
“Shouldn’t he be seeing our child?”
“Since I’m here, I think it’ll be the fastest if Allure was to go.”
“If you say so.”
Witnessing Berthas wearing a smile accompanied by gleaming eyes, the Count found his skin prickling with unease. It was the first time he saw him acting like that. While he absorbed the image of Berthas’ countenance for a fleeting moment, Count Gatan swiftly averted his gaze as their eyes momentarily connected.
As soon as he turned his face to Count Gatan, Berthas’s expression hardened.
“I’ll tell him to leave in ten minutes.”
“Wait here.”
Upon acknowledging his words with a nod, Count Gatan once again inclined in a bow, this time extending his greetings to the Empress of Larchen. As she departed without a word, Count Gatan’s eyes followed her retreating form before being redirected by the summoning of Berthas.
“I trust that what happened here will not leak out.”
“It will never happen.”
“It won’t. It will never leak either.”
Count Gatan gulped, casually avoiding Berthas’ eyes as he uttered scary words.
‘How did the Empress of Larchen get involved with such a person…’
He felt sorry for the Empress of a powerful nation.
“Count.”
“Yes!”
“Why do you think I let the Count live?”
Count Gatan tried to think of Berthas’ sudden question. It looked like he wouldn’t survive unless he answered properly.
“I don’t know.”
It was something he really didn’t know. Count Gatan chose to keep his mouth shut as he felt as though his throat would disappear in an instant.
Berthas, who cast a serious look at him, opened his mouth.
“That’s why.”
“What?”
“That’s why.”
