Chapter 70
Berthas was also lost in thought while listening to her words. Isilis’ magic was reputed to be comparable to that of the first emperor among the emperors of Larchen, and that was why Larchen became the most powerful Empire under her rule.
“It is a strange thing.”
His words made her eyes turn.
What was the reason that Isilis had to prove it? If it was a noble on the Marquis level, they couldn’t push something like this without any evidence. If so, what evidence do they have?
“Can anyone present evidence?”
“It’s possible if three high-ranking nobles of Marquis or higher gather together to raise an appeal.”
“Then, who…”
“Three nobles who lost their children because of this.”
“Are they dead?”
“They’re not dead yet. They will die soon.”
“So, they raised it out of a grudge.”
“If there is no proper evidence, it is they who will rather be caught. But why…”
As the door to the office burst open, the previous Empress entered.
“Evidence?! What nonsense is this!”
“Previous Empress.”
“Isilis. You’re not going to do that, are you?”
Beads of sweat were forming on the previous Empress’ forehead as she had run in. At the same time, Isilis lost her words seeing the expression of bewilderment clearly evident on the previous Empress’ face.
‘…What surprises mother?’
She didn’t know.
“What is there to fear? Don’t worry.”
“Isilis.”
“Don’t worry.”
Isilis turned her head away, ignoring her mother, who continued to call her name. She felt the hypocrisy when the previous Empress seemingly was concerned for her.
‘She neglected me, and now…’
When Isilis was thirsty for affection, it was the previous Empress who threw Isilis away.
The next moment, the previous empress spoke to Isilis, who stubbornly turned her head away and said nothing.
“I don’t want to.”
“If we don’t do that, there is no way to overcome the nobles’ offensive.”
“The nobles are mere insignificant things to the imperial family who protect Larchen. You don’t have to follow their opinions.”
“However, they took issue with the empress’ legitimacy. It has to be seen somehow.”
She suddenly felt puzzled as the previous Empress continued to dissuade her. Why did she keep stopping her?
Berthas, who had been watching the constantly heated exchanges, eventually spoke in the middle.
“Let’s take some time and watch.”
“Are you the regent of Hillenton? The Crown Princess’ father?”
When the previous Empress, who had never looked at him, turned her gaze to him, Berthas spoke while responding to her defiant cold eyes.
“My name is Berthas Hillenton.”
“Nice to meet you.”
The expression didn’t show that at all. Isilis, who had been looking at her mother’s disapproving face with puzzled eyes, hurriedly uttered.
“Previous Empress.”
“Anyway, I’ve conveyed my intention, so I’ll go now.”
“Mother.”
Even though she hesitated for a moment at Isilis’ call, the previous Empress eventually turned around and left the audience room. Berthas, who was watching her, whispered to Isilis.
“Something is strange.”
“Strange?”
“She is hiding something.”
“The previous Empress is always like that.”
Her mother was always like that.
She looked at her with strange eyes, and it got worse after her father’s death. She often smiled, at least when she was with Isilis’ father, but after he died, she was rarely smiling. The warm hugs also became less and less frequent.
Isilis shook her head vigorously as she shook her mind off the past memories. It wasn’t the time for her to think like this. She was in a hurry.
“I need to figure out the nobles’ movements.”
“Is there anything I can help you with?”
“No.”
Isilis beckoned and the wizard, who had been waiting, approached her.
“Call Faylos.”
“I understand, Your Majesty.”
Since it would take some time for Faylos to arrive, Isilis decided to cool her head for a moment. As she got up and went to where the child was, Berthas was following her.
“Aren’t you busy?”
As she asked him, who was chasing after her, Berthas, who threw a faint smile at her, stood close to her and whispered.
“I’m not busy.”
“That is very strange. The Regent of Hillenton has nothing to do.”
While Isilis spoke, looking into his face, Berthas was silent for a moment at her words.
“Shouldn’t you protect the country where my child is the emperor?”
“That’s something you don’t have to worry about.”
Despite her being playful, his lips tightened.
She didn’t know what was bothering him. As Isilis’s mouth fell shut at his stiff face, Berthas spoke to her with his lips raised.
“Are you worried?”
“What?”
“Are you worried about me?”
“What are you…”
“Then, why don’t you just say you’re worried?”
“You’re talking big.”
It was actually true that she was worried. Having become the regent of Hillenton, the process must not have been easy. Even if they were stupid, they were still the Emperor and Crown Prince, so there was no way there was no bloodshed.
Isilis tried to hide her concern by not saying anything about the bloody path he would have walked. It was all over now. She thought it would do him no good to bring it up again.
“Isilis.”
“….”
When she turned her head at the voice, sunlight streamed through the window and fell on his hair. Looking at his shiny black hair, she remembered his face at the port.
It was like that then, too.
“I love you.”
The sudden words made her pause. When she stopped, the attendants, ladies-in-waiting, knights, and wizards stopped behind her.
As he gazed at her surprised, round-eyed, he spoke again.
“I love you.”
“Why are you saying that…”
“I will tell you that every day. I love you.”
She couldn’t understand what Berthas was saying in this exposed place where everyone else was listening. Isilis opened her mouth, trying to control her trembling voice.
“What are you saying all of a sudden?”
“Your family is only me and our child. You know that, right?”
“Sounds natural.”
She sensed that she deliberately left out the previous Empress, but Isilis didn’t mention that part. He was the one who would stand next to her. He was the one who had already stood by her. It meant quite a lot.
Isilis could not escape his gaze until the wind passed between them. Feeling the cold wind brushing past her ears, and she came to her senses. She was able to move when his gaze left her as she was captivated with just a gaze.
Over time, Berthas became that kind of existence to her.
“Isilis. Do you remember the wine of Brego?”
“I remember. Isn’t that the drink I drank with you?”
“I got that drink a while ago.”
“Again?”
It was strange. Although the drink was not that common, Berthas found it easily.
“Do you know where I got that drink?”
“Where?”
“It’s too high-level of information just to tell you.”
He whispered in her ear as she gazed into his eyes glowing with mischief.
“Promise to kiss me first. Then, I’ll let you know.”
“What did you say?”
“Give me a kiss first.”
“Do you want to make a deal with me?”
“This is not even a deal. Think of it as the lingering attachment of a man who wants to be kissed by the woman he loves first.”
She felt heated up by his constant whispering. When she gestured to him, fanning her blushing face for no reason, he lowered his head while following her butterfly-like movements.
“Later at night.”
“You promised.”
“The Empress of Larchen does not lie.”
“Then fine.”
Berthas, turning his face away from her ear, placed his lips lightly on hers.
“This is an advance payment.”
“You…!”
Before he had time to say anything, his mouth opened.
“The Imperial Palace of Hillenton.”
“What?”
“The wine was piled up in Hillenton’s warehouse at the Imperial Palace.”
“What the hell is this all about?”
What did he mean by the wines of Brego were piled up in the warehouse of the Hillenton Empire? That region was the southernmost region of the Larchen Empire.
‘Trade across the empire… I see.’
Recalling her past memories, Isilis noticed something. The estate of Marquis Miller was around there… what was he plotting?
‘Could it be that Marquis Cykra was also his doing?’
Near his estate, the Cykra estate was also located. Since the Margrave was traveling around the border, he knew that Marquis Miller had taken care of Marquis Cyrka by his side since he was a child.
What did he gain by handing over the wines of Brego to Hillenton? Why did he do that? It felt like her head was getting complicated by the neverending questions. As her face grew clouded, Berthas whispered again.
“Let’s look for it together.”
“Together?”
“You don’t have to think for yourself anymore. I am with you.”
Her complicated mind instantly brightened.
It was. She no longer had to worry alone. Berthas Hillenton… the man who would soon be standing next to her, was by her side. It meant that she had someone she could completely trust—the one who loved her enough to dedicate the whole of Hillenton to her.
That was Berthas.
“You called me and teased me with romance.”
Isilis soon heard the voice behind her. It seemed that Faylos had come.
“Long time no see, Berthas.”
“Long time no see.”
Berthas greeted Faylos with a strong grip when he reached out to him. A lot of things were compressed on the words. Even though she had heard that they knew each other, it was the first time she had actually seen the two talk intimately, so Isilis looked at them curiously.
“In the end, you did it.”
“Didn’t I tell you?”
“I never thought you could achieve everything in such a short time.”
Berthas laughed at Faylos, who sounded stunned.
“A man in love can do anything.”
