Chapter 134
“…Why are you protecting me? I don’t fit anyone anymore.”
After a while, Evan quietly opened his mouth.
“Still… Cough, Cough, Cough!”
Seeing Laria started coughing again, he quickly brought a handkerchief to her mouth. Fortunately, no blood came out though their distance became closer in an instant.
In that short moment, he wondered if her words were fake or true.
Because the running tears kept bothering his mind, similar to when she brushed his hair when he was very young.
“You…”
Life itself was difficult, so he thought there was no room for others to enter.
He didn’t get along very well with Laria. However, thinking about it, as Laria regarded him as such, the person who was closest to him was her.
At some point during the seven years, permeating through. In the meantime, he was indifferent to her. He thought she wasn’t particularly interested in him either yet she was crying about his childhood, saying that she was sorry for her indifference.
“…Is this a pretense, or are you serious?”
“What?”
“You are good at that. Bewitching people with lies.”
As a moment of silence passed, Laria, who was quietly glancing at him, asked in a whisper.
“Did you fall for it?”
“In my childhood.”
That meant he wasn’t young anymore.
Even though they were thirteen and fourteen-year-old, a young couple over the age of adulthood faced each other.
Anyway, for the first time, the hearts of the two dry souls who only had each other were entangled. As each of them showed the intimacy they had built up by themselves little by little, unexpected emotions surged.
“Seeing that you are confused whether it is fake or sincere…”
Laria closed her eyes and smiled.
“You still fall for it a little bit.”
“….”
“How bewitched are you?”
“Don’t smile.”
With his dressing gown down, Evan, who was holding a handkerchief to her lips, spoke lowly.
“If you don’t have the confidence to handle it.”
“…What are you talking about?”
“It means that you are no longer a child who used to blush when you’re openly bewitched.”
Although he tried to move away from her, Laria caught him by the wrist. They each shared the same bed for seven years, thinking about the duties and desires they had been ignoring.
“What can I do?”
Laria whispered.
“I was serious, but how can I bewitch you?”
The handkerchief that was on her lips slipped through his fingers. He could feel the warmth of her lips warming on his fingers.
Laria spoke quietly while Evan remained silent.
“But, I am not a child either.”
Their bodies were tense.
“I knew that sleeping hand in hand at night, as you said, doesn’t mean having children.”
Evan didn’t say anything.
No, to be exact, he couldn’t. It was because Ludva said that getting along with his wife was a betrayal of his father… the thirteen-year-old him believed it.
‘And like a reflex, I’ve lived like that until now.’
He hadn’t gotten over it just because he threw Ludva out. To be sincere with the person who sincerely cried for him, that was overcoming.
As their lips met, soon after, the skin started to get tangled.
“…Are you okay.”
Laria whispered at the hesitant touch.
“I’m really fine.”
“No. Ask your doctor first. You can’t overdo it with your body.”
Stopping at the end, Evan didn’t dig into her anymore, no matter what she said. He just hugged her skinny body tightly.
At the end of that night, Laria muttered softly in his arms.
“…I’m sorry for being sick.”
Suddenly he thought his heart was breaking.
Once aware, the mind flowed quickly.
“I regret it, Laria.”
He forcibly sliced the meat to Laria, who seemed to have no appetite, and opened his mouth.
“Since we were young, we had a lot of time, but we spent it all in vain.”
“It’s just our childhood, so what?”
As she laughed helplessly, he replied lowly while gazing at her.
“I should have liked you since I was thirteen.”
“What does a thirteen-year-old know?”
“At least it was nice when you stroked my hair. From then on, I should have clung to liking you.”
“If you do that, I will regret it too.”
Laria said with a laugh even as she coughed and finished her words.
“I will be good to you from the first day I see you, even if it’s fake.”
The conversation did not last long. It was because Laria vomited more and more blood, and she became more and more exhausted.
Around that time, Evan was doing quite a bit of Kallaudin’s work. With him joining in, the power struggle with Duke Orlando was roughly finished. He proudly became the head of the noble faction that even the Emperor couldn’t help but notice him now.
Leaving Laria sleeping exhausted, Evan went to the office to report some things to Kallaudin.
He had no particular father-son relationship with his father. Nevertheless, he was a fairly obedient listener to Kallaudin, and lately, he has become more obedient because he met Laria anyway. And one more…
It was because of the pain of losing a loved one.
“Yes. Did you do everything you were told to do?”
“I sent two people to the Ozburg area and decided to close the Fabianne mine.”
“Alright, I see.”
It was a short conversation. But unlike usual, Evan didn’t go out.
“What, do you have other business?”
“Yes.”
As Evan replied, Kallaudin slowly raised his head and looked at his son.
“What exactly is the name of Laria’s disease?”
Evan didn’t miss his father’s bewildered expression for a moment.
“Avery? I asked the doctor, but he said he couldn’t speak without father’s permission.”
Kallaudin hadn’t even exchanged a few words with Laria before. That wasn’t too strange since he hadn’t really talked to Evan either.
“I wonder what kind of disease it is that even Laria herself doesn’t know about and can’t tell me, her husband.”
“…Now, I wonder why.”
Kallaudin’s voice trembled slightly.
“I heard that you have been completely indifferent to your wife all these years.”
“Not really.”
“With her…”
It was the first time he had ever seen Kallaudin so emotionally agitated.
“…Could it be that you are starting to get attached?”
“It’s already been seven years since we shared the same room under the name of a married couple. There’s no helping it.”
“But, but you… tou only sleep in the room and come out at dawn…”
Evan’s eyes flashed at the unusual reaction. While he was about to say something, Kallaudin touched his forehead with a look of deep despair.
“Get out.”
“Father.”
“Get out at once. Please.”
“…I will leave for now.”
Evan answered with a flash in his eyes.
“I will come back tomorrow. You’ll have your thoughts organized by then.”
In fact, it was tantamount to a declaration of war that he would definitely hear an answer tomorrow.
“So.”
Later that evening, as Laria lay on Evan’s lap and listened to him talk, she asked.
“Will you come?”
“To hear the answer tomorrow.”
“Well, Evan.”
She asked cautiously, rolling her eyes.
“…What is Ffather like? I’ve never met him, so I don’t know…”
“First of all, he is not an ordinary father. On the bad side.”
“I don’t want to say this, but… still, I am grateful to him.”
Laria hesitantly spoke at Evan’s nonchalant words, “After my parents died, I really had nowhere to go. My body was weak, but it was really fortunate that father brought me.”
“….”
“Give me a doctor, give me a nice room, and give me a maid. To be honest, I’ve never been this comfortable anywhere I’ve been.”
“Well, Laria.”
Evan sighed and hesitated. Kallaudin’s reaction earlier was a bit shocking to him as well. Was it really surprising that Evan and Laria became attached?
“To be honest, father is not a man who moves for no reason… he might have brought you to use you somewhere.”
“It’s a shame, though.”
Laria raised her hand to play with Evan’s hair and said.
“If I had been a little healthier, I would have gotten close to father somehow.”
“With father? Father is not close with anyone.”
“You don’t know. Even if I look like this, I’m really good at pleasing others. I am confident.”
“Yes.”
Holding her hand and put it to his lips, Evan whispered, finishing his words.
“So, do your best and be healthy.”
“Yes. By the way, I heard that there will be a masquerade for the first time in ten years tomorrow. Aren’t you going?”
“I’m not going. Only my great-aunt and Ffather will go.”
“Great-aunt…?”
“Yes, she’s a really bad person with a bad personality.”
“Huh? I like that kind of person. I am confident that I can please her, too.”
“That will be difficult.”
“No, I think we can get close enough if I go to the masquerade.”
“Why are you going there with great-aunt? You have to go with me.”
The conversation continued, talking about things that couldn’t be done.
“It’s good to imagine. I really want to see something like that. It must be spectacular.”
“Sit side by side with me and watch until we are exhausted. I’ll pick you up on the way back.”
That night, Laria was sick all night. Not only that she vomited up blood and became feverish, she was even talking nonsense with a dazed expression. Because of that, it was natural for Evan to overturn the Duke’s residence for dealing with Avery, the doctor.
And at dawn, when Laria lost consciousness, Kallaudin quietly called Evan.
His face was covered with indescribable anguish. He had already decided not to go to masquerades. It wasn’t courteous to the Imperial Family that had hosted a major event for the first time in ten years, but that didn’t matter anymore.
That day, Kallaudin told Evan everything.

My gut is screaming that Laria never transmigrated. OG Laria and current Laria have the exact same personality. But even more telling, Laria got to be healthy and do everything she said she would do if she was healthy. Evan made it happen for her 😭 Only question, though, is how did Laria end up with memories of modern day Korea???
