Chapter 1
How can life be so shitty.
“Rurutia Brucke, will you have Count Hyde as your lawfully wedded husband?”
“Haa . . .”
Rurutia, the bride, let out a long, heavy sigh instead of an answer.
She was a sane person. And as a sane person, how could she possibly want to get married to Count Hyde?
Aside from being a whooping thirty years older than her, she knew for a fact that Hyde would be a terrible husband.
In less than a year, he’d have an affair with another woman. And just so their affair wouldn’t be disturbed, Count Hyde would poison Rurutia and kill her.
Even God was indifferent to her.
She thought she finally escaped from her father’s abuse, but this time, she was about to die by the hands of an adulterous husband?
“Rurutia Brucke.”
As she wallowed in her imminent death, the priest on the podium urged her to respond.
It was her wedding, but she couldn’t help but think about her future.
“I . . .”
As she was about to speak, she was immediately rendered speechless.
There was a perfectly sculpted statue in front of her.
Neatly styled translucent silver hair, clear amethyst-like purple eyes . . .
The statue emitted a strong presence even though he was dressed in an ordinary priest’s robes, the very symbol of abstinence.
“Please speak.”
Wait, what was she supposed to say again?
At a loss for words, she was absolutely captivated by the statue.
“Do you not hear me?”
The statue’s lips moved, and Rurutia hesitated.
The statue was a person?
Who was this beautiful sculpture?
The person who was supposed to officiate this wedding was a high priest, but Rurutia heard that he was replaced by a different priest at the last minute.
A priest’s rank was based on their age.
The priest here seemed like he was in his early twenties at most, so he was most likely a low-ranking priest who had just begun his career.
Hm . . .
Come to think of it, this was a golden opportunity to overturn her wedding.
At the very least, she knew she’d be able to escape a death by poisoning at the hands of the heinous Count Hyde if this wedding was stopped.
“Let’s set aside the vows for now. Do you have someone you like, Sir Priest?”
The priest on the podium frowned slightly.
“Are you talking to me?”
“Yes.”
As a servant of God, a priest wasn’t allowed to have a relationship during his lifetime.
So her question was extremely rude.
The priest lowered his gaze, his brows furrowing.
“I don’t have anyone like that.”
“. . .”
“. . .”
“That’s a relief. If you want compensation, just name your price.”
She wasn’t bluffing.
She had a father who valued his family name above all else, so he’d pay any amount to cover up such a scandal.
Rurutia threw the bouquet behind her, and instead of her groom— she stole the priest’s lips.
She thought his lips would be as cold as marble, but they were warm and soft.
It was a short kiss, so there wasn’t any time to feel any emotions.
As she pulled away, she grinned at the priest, as if to say, ‘Don’t worry, just trust me.’
Even though she had stolen his lips, Rurutia planned to back off and return quietly to her hometown.
The priest stumbled back, dazed by the kiss. Apparently, Rurutia’s intentions didn’t reach him.
The brief silence that weighed heavily down the wedding hall suddenly broke, and an eruption of various prayers, yelling and whistling thundered throughout the church.
Amidst it all was Count Hyde’s indignant shout.
“Wife, what are you doing?!”
“I have yet to say my vows and kiss the Count, so how am I your wife?”
“You were promised to me, so we’re already practically married!”
“Unfortunately, I gave my kiss of oath to Sir Priest over here. Our marriage never took place.”
The furious Count Hyde’s face turned bright red. It would be better if his blood pressure shot through the roof and he collapsed, really.
“How dare this wench humiliate me!”
He raised his hand high up.
Rurutia could have easily avoided it, but she chose to stand her ground.
The marriage would get cancelled all the more swiftly if the bride got hit in front of a large crowd.
The older man’s hand was about to descend.
Rurutia steeled her nerves.
“Urk!”
Instead of Rurutia receiving a slap on the cheek, it was the middle-aged man himself who let out a pained cry.
This was because the paladin who was standing near the podium blocked Hyde’s hand with his gauntlet. Hyde recoiled, his hand swelling immediately because of the hard metal that it hit.
“Count Hyde, stand down.”
That wasn’t all.
All the paladins at their stations inside the church hall jumped to attention and stood in front of Rurutia. Astonished gasps and praises burst out from the wedding guests at the sight of the majestic Holy Knights in their silver armor.
They surrounded her as though they were protecting her.
Count Hyde took a step back under the immense pressure of the paladins, then shouted.
“Just what are you doing?!”
“We’d like to ask you the same question.”
In front of their protective formation, one paladin looked down at Count Hyde.
“Can’t you see this woman just insulted my honor?! Get out of my way!”
“What are you going to do?”
“What else? If I don’t correct her now, this wench will just be more disobedient!”
“Instead of just being punished for blasphemy, do you want to be dragged to the dungeon?”
Wait. Wasn’t it supposed to be Rurutia who’d be charged for blasphemy because she kissed a priest?
She was very thankful that the paladin stopped Hyde before he hit her, but what was he talking about?
Another paladin from behind the podium, who had been so shocked by the kiss that he only started moving again now, approached the priest Rurutia kissed and dropped down to his knees.
“Commander, congratulations on your wedding!”
‘What? Excuse me?’
He’s the Commander of the Holy Knights?!
