Chapter 3
“Why are they giving such expensive things to a kid like her? I guess it’s just a small change for the Duchy since they’re overflowing with money.”
The maids murmured as they discreetly sold off Riersha’s belongings to indulge in extravagance.
The fact that her room didn’t have a single toy was also because of this—especially paper and crayons, which were in high demand, disappeared in a day. It had also become a decisive reason why she couldn’t properly read and write until she was ten years old.
The private tutor assigned to her by the family would spend some time and then leave. The fact that the teacher had ended up teaching Riersha, who was out of favor with the Duke, was very displeasing.
“If you bother me, I’ll report everything to the Duke. So, you know what you have to do, right? Come on, give me your hand. Bad children deserve punishment.”
Riersha’s fingertips twitched as unpleasant memories came to mind, and she unknowingly shook her head. She exhaled as if it had taken her a long time to walk before turning around.
A glimpse of despair passed through her shaky eyes.
“Why, why am I still here?”
She had barely managed to escape only about half of the estate at this point. She then tapped her sore leg with her small hand and looked at colorful children’s accessories that were hanging from her neck, fingers, and wrists.
Yes, these were all going to be sold as well.
“Hiing, oww.”
Her stamina had diminished along with her shrinking body. She realized this fact only now.
Riersha was moving as fast as an ant’s eyelids, and her strides were so short it brought tears to her eyes. She looked down at the cloth that now felt like a burden and strengthened her grip, taking another step.
The outside sunlight gradually disappeared, revealing a shadowy, dense forest.
‘If I just pass through here, I’ll be outside…!’
She thought, unaware of one crucial fact.
…This forest was known as the most dangerous in the empire, commonly referred to as the ‘Forest of Monsters.’
“What is this? It’s like rats ate it.”
A boy with silver hair who looked barely ten years old frowned as he held up a slice of bread with holes poked through it. He had come looking for Riersha, who usually hid in the Tower of Truth, yet she was nowhere to be seen.
On the other hand, maids were kneeling around the boy, trembling and pressing their foreheads to the ground.
“Where did Riersha go?”
“Well, well…”
“Why is her room so empty again?”
The boy narrowed his eyes, seeing no sign of Riersha’s belongings anywhere in the castle. His expression hardened.
No way…
The boy’s face hardened.
“You’re not about to tell me Riersha has disappeared.”
“…For, forgive us! Please spare us. It’s because Miss Riersha doesn’t listen and is so free-spirited…”
Riersha’s maid pleaded, trying to shift the blame onto Riersha as much as possible. On a day like this, when the second young master himself had come visiting, she had to be on duty…
The maid couldn’t even raise her head, seething with resentment inside.
‘Why is the second young master suddenly acting like this?!’
The members of the Arachrene family were all known to have difficult personalities. In particular, with the heir vacating the family, there was no one to stop Ricardor except Duke Arachrene himself. So, there was no need to explain how the whims of the child could be so infuriating, especially since Ricardor was merciless, sensitive, and harsh with the subordinates.
It had to be her who was caught in his capricious mood today.
‘Why did the second young master come to meet that half-wit child?’
The maid found it somewhat strange since she knew he disliked Riersha and often called her a rat. Wasn’t Ricardor Arachrene the one who always found and chased Riersha when she hid in the Tower of Truth?
‘Still, it’s a relief. Who would care if that one child disappeared? She’s nothing but a burdensome to the family.’
Surely, this time, Riersha must be hiding somewhere and plotting to gain attention. At the thought, the maid planned to sternly scold Riersha to ensure she never repeated such behavior whenever Ricardor would leave. Then, she breathed a sigh of relief, observing Ricardor’s mood.
Fortunately, he didn’t seem too angry.
At that moment, a knight who had been searching the surroundings of the castle under Ricardor’s orders returned.
“I found traces of Miss Riersha, Young Master Ricardor.”
“What is it?”
The knight held up a colorful bracelet in his hand. It seemed like a common toy bracelet that children would play with. However, Ricardor, who had never seen such a childish item, looked at it questioningly.
“It seems to be Miss Riersha’s belongings… It was found near the Forest of Monsters.”
“…What did you say?”
The maid, who was begging for forgiveness, turned pale.
The Forest of Monsters.
Ricardo’s gaze towards the servant turned fierce.
“Huuu, not scawwy. Huuu, really not scawwy.”
Riersha blinked her watery eyes as if tears were about to burst out any moment.
Nervously, she bit her lip and anxiously looked around her surroundings. It felt like something would suddenly jump out from the surroundings. Even Riersha, who had an ordinary physique like any other civilian, now realized that this was no ordinary forest.
She couldn’t hear the usual chirping of birds. Though she didn’t know what it meant, the child’s senses were expressing unease.
‘…Surely, when I came here with Brother Ricardor, I didn’t feel this way, though what does this eerie atmosphere mean?’
Until now, no wild beast had come out of the forest to disturb the garden within the castle, and it was a mistake to assume that everything would be fine. She began to wonder if the forest within the estate could possibly be a dangerous place.
So, subconsciously, she thought this forest was a safe place.
However…
Drip, drip.
A sticky liquid dripped from her head down to her cheek.
“What is …this?”
Riersha, who was wiping her chin, froze in shock.
As she slowly raised her head, she realized that a monster several times her size was staring down at her. The monster had a clearly hungry look.
“Gasp, gasp…!”
Drop.
Startled to the point of gasping, she dropped the cloth she had been holding. As she figured out her situation, Riersha sprinted forward blindly.
“Go, go awaaaaaayyy! Scawwwyy, monteeer! Huah, hewp. Nyoo!”
How could she have thought to go into the forest alone with such confidence? Even as she ran, the fear of being caught by the monster made big dollops of tears stream down her face.
“Sniff!”
She hated the pain. She didn’t want to experience that chilling sensation of impending death again.
‘I just wanted to protect my family…!’
In truth, she didn’t want to leave the Duke’s castle.
Why couldn’t she be happy with her family?
‘Was that too much to ask for?’
She failed to see the tree root sticking on the ground and tripped over it.
“Mom…!”
As her body hit the ground, her delicate skin scraped against the earth. Every inch of her body throbbed with pain, yet compared to the imminent suffering, it was nothing.
‘If this was going to happen anyway, why did I come back to the past?’
To think that she would be devoured by a monster after barely surviving…
Riersha felt the end and tightly shut her eyes. The next moment, a sudden burst of magical energy surged around her body, along with a refreshing energy.
Pong—! Pong—!
Simultaneously, she heard a strange noise.
“…Uh?”
After a while, when she felt no pain, Riersha cautiously opened her eyes. She could see soap bubbles filling the air, trapping the monster and rendering it unable to move.
As she marveled at the scene—
“Who said you could enter the forest without permission?”
—Unbelievably, it was Ricardor who appeared.
