Chapter 1
“Owaaah!”
On the day Riersha was born, Duchy Arachrene fell silent.
“Tsk, you’re quite worthless for someone who devoured your mother’s life.”
It was the first thing Duke Arachrene, who had been waiting for the child to be born in the deep dawn, said.
The Duke gazed with red eyes at the newborn with a glow of disappointment. To the child born in a precarious situation where the mother’s life was at stake, no hint of any magical power was felt. It was a child with no possibility of awakening any ability.
Perhaps because of this, he made a cruel decision.
“Make sure all traces of today are erased.”
They chose not to let the world know of the child’s existence.
Born with silver hair and red eyes, the Arachrene family, known for their strength and beauty, had an heir whose only trait was the color of her eyes.
Riersha Arachrene.
The child was left to her own devices right after being born, only given her name. Riersha grew up quietly in the outskirts, away from her true nature. People were aware of her existence but treated her as invisible.
‘…My grandfather, my father, my brothers, they all hate me and despise me.’
Until Riersha’s tenth birthday, the Young Duke, her supposed father, had never once come to see her.
‘I’m too repulsive for them to look at.’
Not celebrated by anyone on the day of her birth, Riersha sat on the edge of her bed, trembling. The mournful sound of the child’s cry filled the room.
‘Wouldn’t that have been better if it were my mother who had survived?’
Why did the family choose to save her instead of her mother? She had overheard the murmurs that they could have saved either her mother or herself.
When the patchy pink hair came into view, she tightly shut her eyes.
“…Huuh.”
Today was the day Riersha, in an effort to catch her grandfather’s attention, had painstakingly dyed her hair alone. And as she walked up to her grandfather, she was scolded.
“Who said you could wander around the castle as you please?”
Duke Arachrene, upon spotting his granddaughter before him, initially appeared surprised, his eyes widening before they quickly turned to a full expression of fury.
“Do not set foot outside your room. Do you understand?”
Feeling unfairly rebuked in front of everyone, Riersha wished she could just disappear somewhere. Guided back to her room by a maid, she apologized to her grandfather throughout the way as the fear of being shunned for the rest of her life gripped her.
“I’m sorry, Duke. I’m sorry! I won’t do it again!”
However, the Duke didn’t even glance back at her pitiful voice, and Riersha had to spend several days confined to her room. That was when she realized… that silently living as if dead was for everyone’s sake.
She was the Duke Arachrene’s dirt.
That was her position.
“Receiving the last name is already frustrating enough, and with every action you take, why do you have to be so different? I just can’t understand.”
“Considering she hasn’t awakened her abilities until now, perhaps… could it be that the lineage is gradually weakening?”
“…Shh, don’t talk nonsense. If this gets out, the Duke’s position will be troubled.”
“Doesn’t she seem to have no idea that problems have arisen in the family because of her? Why did the Young Duke choose to take in such a child? It’s because of that, the Young Duke…!”
“What are you whispering about there!”
The maids, who had been murmuring behind, fell silent and scattered as the chief maid appeared from behind. Hearing the maids’ words from the corridor, Riersha bit her lip hard.
‘What could have happened to Father because of me?’
Riersha bowed her head deeply.
As the chief maid turned the corner of the corridor, she paused in surprise. She was the one who had never spoken a word Riersha didn’t want to hear.
The chief maid seemed momentarily flustered, but she quickly composed herself.
“…Are you still not asleep? Please go inside, Miss. Don’t pay attention to what they don’t know and mock thoughtlessly.”
“….Yes.”
“I will take action tomorrow.”
She nodded, assuring that she was fine, though her heart felt immeasurably heavy.
A while later, in the deep early morning of that day, Riersha, who had just managed to fall asleep, opened her eyes to the noisy commotion outside.
“What’s that sound?”
She saw the center of the castle outside the window ablaze.
“What is that…?”
Riersha couldn’t believe her eyes as she witnessed the situation unfolding in the Duke’s castle. As she got up and opened the window to see the castle engulfed in flames due to an invasion, there were screams and chaos.
“What, what should I do…”
Just as she was in a state of confusion, the door suddenly burst open.
“…Brother Ricardor?”
The person who opened the door and came in was her second brother, who had always harbored animosity towards her. As Riersha staggered backward at the sight of the intimidating Ricardor, his hands firmly grabbed her.
His hands were as cold as ice.
“What are you doing here, you fool?! If you saw the situation, shouldn’t you run away immediately?”
“I, I don’t know what’s going on.”
“What…?”
Ricardor responded as if questioning the absurdity of her words. Soon, his brows furrowed fiercely.
“…Are you the only one left here?”
It seemed so.
Riersha bit her lip and nodded. Even the chief maid, whom she had relied on the most, left her alone at a critical moment.
Ricardor nervously ran his fingers through his silver hair.
“These things.”
“….”
“There’s no time to explain right now, so come with me.”
“But, but Grandfather said not to step out of the room—”
“That…!”
Just as he was about to explain, seeing Riersha overwhelmed with fear, Ricardor softened his expression. Instead, he grabbed her and started leading her somewhere.
Walking along the dark corridor, Riersha stumbled and glanced down at the arm that was pulling her. She felt a damp sensation, and upon looking closer, she noticed fresh wounds that seemed to have just formed on his arm.
Recognizing her reaction to his injury, Ricardor covered his arm. Then, he briefly explained the current situation to Riersha, who had no idea what was happening.
“The imperial army has stormed the Duke’s castle. Grandfather is trying to handle the situation.”
“Why is the imperial army here?”
“…Seems like there’s a traitor in the family.”
A traitor?
Riersha’s expression became even more bewildered. Understanding the complex family situation at just ten years old was incredibly difficult. It was only natural, considering that no one had ever informed her.
In the meanwhile, Ricardor led her into the forest beyond the castle. Judging by their quickening pace, it was apparent that the current situation was quite serious.
“Oberon will take you to a safe place. I’ll come back for you when this is all over, so wait until then.”
“… You’ll come back for me? Why?”
“What do you think of your family?”
Of course…
Riersha bit her lip hard. On one hand, she was bewildered by the current situation.
Oberon was the faithful aide of Duke Arachrene. He was a name that she was familiar with, having dedicated his life to the family for many years. Because of that, she couldn’t believe that her grandfather had sent such an important person to protect her.
As they delved deeper into the forest, they came across Oberon, who had been anxiously waiting. He seemed relieved when he spotted them and hurried over.
“Young Master Ricardor!”
“Oberon. Take Riersha to a safe place immediately.”
“Yes, I will do so.”
Oberon nodded solemnly and looked at Riersha. Then, with a smile that seemed to convey relief—
Whoop.
—The sharp sword pierced Ricardor in an instant.
