Chapter 5
“Hey, Costas!”
“Manager, don’t you see that look in his eyes? It’s Costas’ look. That brat is clearly angry right now.”
“I told you not to come!”
The voices of the men could be heard through the window.
One had a rough complexion and looked the oldest, while another had blond hair and was tall. The youngest of them was careful with his words.
“How have you been, Costas?”
“Long time no see, Costas!”
The men entering the library smiled brightly and waved at the lord.
“Why have you come here?”
The lord spoke sternly.
“Some of us from the military procurement department are on leave today. We wanted to see our lovely junior and confirm the rumors.”
“It seems that the rumor that you live in the library has already spread throughout the base, Costas.”
The blonde-haired man talking to the lord noticed me behind him and turned his head to the side. The swarthy man did the same. Our eyes met.
“…..Oh.”
“….This is crazy.”
They smiled with interest, as if they had found some very interesting prey. At the sound, he even reached out to protect me.
“We’ve confirmed it, so we’re going now.”
“Well, I didn’t know you were such a romantic type.”
The man with the blond hair chuckled softly. He studied my face closely, then turned his fierce gaze to Costas.
“You, boy. The reason you haven’t dated yet is because your standards are way too high!”
The men’s eyes lit up.
“Is your name Bibi? It’s a beautiful name.”
“Hello, Ms Bibi. I work in the logistics department at Fleet Headquarters… Oh, Costas!”
Costas stepped between me and the men, his broad back completely blocking my view of their faces.
“You’re disturbing us.”
“What a tough guy.”
I didn’t know how to stop the men quarreling. But if I didn’t, the seniors who noticed the commotion would come out of the reading room.
“Excuse me…”
I spoke carefully.
“Huh? She talked!”
“She really talked!”
They were astonished, as if they had never seen anyone speak before.
“This is a library, so please be quiet.”
“Bibi. Sorry for the boys…”
Costas apologized on their behalf.
“No, there’s no need to apologize.”
“I’ll take them out. But we’re moving the books to the warehouse anyway.”
Costas tried to help me. He knelt down and started to pick up one by one the books that had fallen to the floor.
“Books? We’ll help, too. Even if we don’t know much else, we have well-trained bodies to use our strength.”
Then the other men began to pick up books as well. Costas tried to shoo them away, saying they were only a hindrance, but their hands were already full of books.
“Miss? Where shall we put the books?”
The blonde-haired man asked me during a break.
“Just take them to the warehouse.”
I quickly directed them to the storeroom.
“Your presence only hinders Bibi.”
“Are you all right?”
“I was just sitting here quietly reading books.”
“You must have been secretly watching Miss Bibi with those ominous eyes.”
The men, Costas and his friend, walked on, arguing with each other. At first they didn’t seem to get on, but now they seemed to know each other well, almost like brothers.
“Miss Bibi.”
The blond man interrupted me.
“Yes?”
“You’re so beautiful, I’m sure you have a lover, don’t you?”
I was taken aback by the question, and Costas beside me jumped, making me jump as well.
“Well, actually, no.”
“Really? That’s surprising. So do you have an ideal type or any particular characteristics of the men you’ve dated so far…”
That was a lot of personal questions. Not only the man who asked the question, but all the men present listened intently to my answer.
Costas didn’t take his eyes off me.
“I… well…”
“…”
“I think I like men with a prominent forehead.”
It was a lie.
Costas had a hairstyle that covered his forehead and I knew it. So I deliberately said the opposite.
Costas didn’t react and said nothing. I quickly added,
“Actually, I have no intention of going out with anyone. Oh, we’ve arrived at the warehouse.”
As I opened the locked warehouse door, a cool breeze washed over me. The scent of old books wafted through the air.
I asked the men to put the books back in their places and checked the number of books. There were no books missing.
As I put the books on the shelves according to the classification chart, I felt eyes watching me from behind. It was as if they were watching a fascinating show, and I felt burdened by their scrutiny.
I worked diligently with my hands and finished quickly.
“Are you finished?”
Costas asked. Did he think I was doing something grand?
“Yes, I’m finished. Please come out.”
The men left the warehouse with an uneasy expression on their faces.
Even as I locked the warehouse door, I could still feel their eyes on me from behind. I couldn’t even lock a door properly with their eyes on me.
“Bibi?”
I heard a familiar voice from behind me.
“Julia…?”
Julia was staring at me with her eyes wide open.
“It’s lunchtime… I wanted to ask if you wanted to eat with me.”
Julia glanced at the men. Then the man with the most arrogant face among them stepped forward and smiled ingratiatingly at Julia.
“Ahem. I’m sorry, miss. We were helping Miss Bibi here, so I hope we haven’t caused you any inconvenience?”
“No, not at all! In fact, I’m grateful.”
Julia said, blushing slightly.
Even though we were in a corridor, her voice was loud and excited… If the manager heard her like this, he would certainly scold her.
“But it seems that the hiring requirements for librarians have changed recently,” the blond man said.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, Miss Bibi and Miss Julia are both very beautiful, so we were wondering if the new requirements now include hiring women with beauty.”
This man was very skillful at assigning tasks to women.
“Yes? Haha.”
Julia, who had been grumbling earlier about how arrogant noble-born men were, seemed to forget those words and smiled brightly.
As Julia continued to stare at the man in front of her, I feared she might suddenly collapse in his presence.
“Julia, let’s go for lunch. Where would you like to go? Yes?”
I grabbed Julia’s arm, but she didn’t even flinch. Her eyes were already on the men in front of her.
“You said you wanted to eat. How about joining us?”
The blond man suggested. Despite Costas’ attempts to stop him, the man quickly elbowed him in the side.
“Oh, what are we going to do? We were supposed to have lunch with the director today.”
Julia said regretfully.
“Oh, that’s too bad.”
“But if it’s dinner, it’s possible! I get off work at six today, so it won’t be a problem after that. Of course, Bibi, too.”
What? Julia even dragged me into it.
“We feel the same way. And of course Costas’ with us.”
The men included Costas without hesitation.
“There’s a new jazz cafe right in front of us. The manager, Lance, went there and said the atmosphere was quite nice. How about eating there?”
The men suggested. Julia’s face immediately lit up.
“That sounds great. Should we make a reservation for how many people? Since there are four of you, we’ll bring two more people.”
“We’d welcome that, wouldn’t we? Director?”
The blond man looked at his superior as if seeking approval. It seemed like a formality, but it was practically a done deal.
Dinner at a jazz cafe.
“Of course, that’s great. And the Jazz Café is a very nice place, too. Then we’ll pick you up at 6 pm when we’re done working.”
“What exactly are you thinking? Making dinner plans with a person you’ve just met!”
After the plans were made, I whispered to Julia next to me.
“A person you’ve just met? Is this the first time you’ve met Lord Costas?”
“Not the Lord, but the other people.”
“More importantly, how can you not say a word to me when there are such handsome men around?”
Why does she always have to pick a fight like that?
I sighed heavily as I dried my face. I didn’t want Lord Costas and I to be found in this situation!
“They just helped us out of a predicament. I told you so!”
“Hmm, did they?”
“But how did Julia know who they were and make plans with them?”
“You really don’t know how to read people. Do these men look like ordinary people to you? They’re soldiers who work at headquarters. They’re the ones who asked about me, and that officer, did you say? He’s exactly my type!”
“Even if they have a high position, arrogant men aren’t my cup of tea.”
“Bibi, they weren’t arrogant.”
Julia didn’t back down.
“Are there more people you’re bringing? And two more people?”
“Bibi, you’re really naive. Very, very naive.”
Julia laughed mischievously and spoke.
“There will be many more people. A lot more.”
“Really?”
“I think there will be a great battle of wits tonight. Just to secure two seats.”
