Chapter 48 – Part 2
It was heavy because he wasn’t moving along with me. Dad burst out laughing when he saw me frowning.
“Here. Is it okay now?”
“Yep. We seal the promise like this. This is how you do it.”
Dad’s hands were so big, so I stamped one finger on his thumb and another finger on his ring finger. And then I triumphantly smiled. “Dad, you will be in big trouble if you break your promise now.”
He took back his hand with a laughing expression. I was amazed at how different he looked.
“What big trouble?”
“Uhm, I won’t practice writing if you don’t keep your promise. I also won’t eat breakfast,” I threatened him.
“That can’t happen.”
“That’s what I’m saying. Anyway, you will be in big trouble.”
Dad smiled and held out his hand again, “Your hand, please.”
“Huh?” I reluctantly gave him my hand.
“…It’s so tiny.”
“That’s because yours are big.”
“Yours are small.”
I pouted, but it just made him laugh even more.
“You already promised me, so you have to keep it a secret. Understand?”
Dad let go of my hand, but he didn’t take his eyes away from me. “I understand,” he said meekly and nodded his head.
After completing my mission, I went back to bed with a relaxed mind. I covered myself with the blanket. “Then, I will really sleep now.”
I closed my eyes after seeing my Dad sitting down on the chair again.
But it wasn’t long before I opened my eyes again.
“Why aren’t you sleeping yet?” Dad asked as soon as I opened my eyes.
I turned my head to him. “I can’t sleep…”
I could sense his eyes on me.
“What should I do?” he asked, which was nice, but also worrying because he might hit the back of my head.
Biting my lip, I said, “Uhm… Pihne usually sings me a lullaby and reads me fairy tales.”
“I didn’t bring any fairy tale books.”
“Uhm, Pihne also tells me about old stories.”
Children’s stories and legends, like the fox who talked to clouds.
“Hmm, I want a fun story!”
Dad stayed silent for a while, and then opened his mouth as if he remembered something. “Uhm, in the past…”
I closed my eyes in anticipation of Dad’s low voice.
“It wasn’t long after returning from the battlefield. His senses had become dull, and he became sensitive to blood, so there were quite a few accidents.”
Dad’s voice was really nice. It was a little different than what I expected, but it was nice to listen to because it was night.
“He was at a very ambitious age back then. He feared nothing, and he could hold anything in his hand if he wanted to.”
I grabbed my blanket and tried hard to fight the urge to open my eyes.
’But what on earth is this all about? Isn’t it Dad’s story and not an old story?’
It was said that before he received the title Grand Duke in the original story, he was the youngest to lead the battlefield with the Imperial Order. For that reason, he was now trusted by the Emperor.
How old had he been at that time?
I was curious, but I thought that Dad would stop speaking once I opened my eyes, so I quietly listened to him.
“A person’s life was as insignificant as a fly. He couldn’t count how many he had killed. It was boring when he wasn’t on the battlefield.”
’…Pardon? I can assure you; I could put up the veil right now if I wanted to.’
“Was it a very uninteresting story?” Dad mumbled.
I couldn’t tell if it was directed at me or if he was saying it to himself, and it wasn’t even an interesting story. No, that was not the problem. It was the violent topic!
It just showed how much Dad had no idea what legends and stories were suited to tell children. I needed to sleep now before I heard more of his horror stories.
“One day, Dante went to call a carriage and was waiting in front of a shabby wall in an alley. Then there was a commotion.”
“Then the door of the house I was leaning on suddenly swung open, and a white hand grabbed me and pulled me in. It was quite strong.”
’A white hand popped out?’
It sounded terrifying, but on the contrary, Dad seemed to think it was funny.
“She suddenly dragged me inside the door, put her hand over my mouth, and told me to be quiet. And that was the first time I saw your mother. She was really beautiful.”
At that moment, I was already on the cusp of sleep. My ears pricked up without realizing it.
’Huh…? I thought it was some kind of weird horror story, but it was about Mom and Dad?’
(T/N: The most interesting story your parents could tell you is about their love stories. It was always so fun to listen to, and I loved listening to them as well, wishing I can also have their kind of love story heehee~)
